Thalamus Announces Hippocampus – An Institutional Memory Layer and Command Center for GME Operations and Workforce Planning

Thalamus Announces Hippocampus – An Institutional Memory Layer and Command Center for GME Operations and Workforce Planning

February 20, 2025 – San Diego, CA – Thalamus, the leading platform for managing physician training and recruitment workflows, today unveiled Hippocampus, a new institutional product designed for Designated Institutional Officials (DIOs) and Graduate Medical Education (GME) offices. The announcement was made at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Annual Conference in San Diego.

Named after the neuroanatomical structure responsible for memory consolidation, Hippocampus is built to serve as the “institutional memory layer” and operational command center for GME, bringing together recruitment activity, compliance workflows, and match outcomes across all programs in a single, centralized experience.

“GME leaders manage enormous complexity coordinating programs across their institutions. Yet the tools supporting them haven’t kept pace to support that work,” said Jason Reminick, MD, MBA, MS, CEO and Founder of Thalamus. “Hippocampus is designed to provide that foundation—a centralized command center that transforms fragmented activity into clarity, foresight, and coordinated action. It aggregates data into a ‘single source of truth’ so institutional leaders can see what’s happening, what’s at risk, and what needs to happen next without living in email, spreadsheets, and open browser tabs.”

Hippocampus will focus on four key capabilities:

  • Institution Recruitment Insights – Aggregate existing Thalamus data across programs to show application, interview and match outcome trends at the institution and specialty level.
  • Program Workflow Roll-Ups – Surface program-level activity in a single DIO view, with alerts for lagging or at-risk actions to reduce status-chasing and follow-up.
  • Compliance Reporting – Track key compliance initiatives across programs to replace manual email tracking and strengthen institutional documentation.
  • Centralized data aggregation – Provide upload and data ingestion options (e.g., CSVs, PDFs) to aggregate additional application, interview and outcomes data for programs using any application platform or match provider.

While institutions already use a mix of Residency Management Software (RMS), application services, match services and homegrown dashboards, Hippocampus is designed to sit above those tools as the institutional operating layer, focusing on orchestration, foresight, and cognitive relief rather than simply another report.

Thalamus kicked off the Hippocampus Institutional Pilot Program (HIPP) with 15 institutional partners at the National Association of DIOs (NADIO) Conference in St. Louis, December 7-9, 2025. HIPP collaborators are providing early feedback through dedicated design sessions with Thalamus’ product team and partnering to help shape the roadmap for both Hippocampus and the broader institutional platform.

“Our vision is for Hippocampus to become the operating system for GME and, ultimately, the foundation for physician workforce planning,” said Vlad Eidelman, PhD, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Thalamus. “By activating the data Thalamus already manages across thousands of programs, we can give institutions a trusted, unified view today, and build the data backbone for the next generation of physician recruitment.”

DIOs and institutional leaders interested in learning more at Hippocampus can visit Thalamus at booth #136 in the 2026 ACGME Annual Conference Exhibit Hall or contact us at hippocampus@thalamusgme.com.
